Bowman, Lee, Omar and Tlaib also were among the 17 sponsors of Bush’s resolution asking the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. Challenges to Bush and the others were possible even before the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 or Israel’s subsequent attack on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It is unfortunate, Andrabi said, that the House Democratic leadership has not taken a stronger stance against AIPAC’s efforts to knock off rank-and-file Democrats. It remains unclear whether House Democrats will help incumbents fend off primary challengers through campaign fundraising arms. Before Oct. 7, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., issued statements of support for Omar and others, saying he will support the reelection of every House Democratic incumbent, regardless of ideology.

Ford, who has been a part of UAW negotiations since 1982, pleaded with union members and leaders to work with the company, instead of against it, to reach a tentative deal to "end to this acrimonious round of talks." Such comments by the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford are uncharacteristic during contract talks with UAW. Ford, ahead of speaking on stage, told reporters he wanted to "elevate" the conversation about the contract negotiations. This should not be Ford versus the UAW," Ford said. "It should be Ford and the UAW vs. Toyota and Honda, Tesla, and all the Chinese companies that want to enter our home."

It's indicative of a shift in how Americans view the labor movement in the post-COVID-crisis era. In a Reuters-Ipsos poll of Americans, some 58% of respondents said they supported the United Auto Workers union's strike at the Big Three Detroit car manufacturers. AdvertisementAdvertisementAside from this strike, support for labor unions has been increasing on the right. The UAW's strike represents a culmination of issues that have come to a head in the post-COVID-crisis labor movement, labor experts told Insider. Now even some Republican elected officials are showing up to support UAW workers' demands — even if they don't necessarily agree with its leadership.

Stellantis said the facility would "continue to be our North American headquarters and North America technical center." It's not guaranteed the facilities would close under a labor deal; however, Stellantis is required to include potential closures or sales of any location where a UAW member works, a company source said. Stellantis North American Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart, who is overseeing the UAW talks, said the company needs to "modernize" the Mopar facilities. Stewart, without disclosing details of the plan, described the company's proposal for Belvidere as a "very compelling offer." The Mopar facilities that could close include Atlanta PDC; Boston PDC; Centerline Warehouse & Packaging; Chicago PDC; Marysville PDC; Milwaukee PDC; New York PDC; Orlando PDC; Sherwood PDC; and Warren PDC.
